Galaxy S9 is next big weapon in Samsung’s arsenal, ready to take on contenders and dominate the market. Being the 9th iteration of the Galaxy S lineup, S9 is going to be another milestone in mobile tech. Samsung’s Galaxy S8 was a head turner, a new formula, tweaking the already glorious S7 and adding some more to the mix.
This formula is working good for Samsung but the sale figures tell a different story with the S8 not capturing the market like it’s previous siblings did. Maybe it’s the price since S8 is coming in a premium package and at that price, a lot of contenders are offering almost similarly specced devices. Will an even better newer formula work for the Galaxy S9, read on to find out.
Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus Display, does the ratio fit in?
Samsung had really done away with the traditional methods of manufacturing a smartphone with the S8. The norms had changed with the Galaxy S8 pulling an all-out stunt with the display. Long gone were the aspect ratio concept and for a minute though it almost looked like a script out of Apple’s iPhone 6 launch, the resolution was something new for a smartphone and the aspect ratio it came with puzzled almost everyone not that a normal consumer is going to ponder all these specs. The resolution came in at 2960×1440, is it 1440p then?
In a way it is 1440p but not your regular 16:9 1440p, this new screen with an aspect ratio of 18.5:9. This odd resolution, however, it may sound had some drawbacks and positives. The positive side of having a stretched display like this was that it made the device feel absurdly small for something with 5.8 inch display, the handling seemed ever so smooth and feel in hands, it’s so unreal, this is a big note to mention for the Galaxy S8 plus which measures in at 6.2 inches.
The stretched standards will be followed on for the Galaxy S9 as well, with rumors pointing to 4K 18.5:9 aspect ratio. This theory is true as well with leaks of the display panel showing two devices one with a 6-inch panel, obviously the Galaxy S9 and the other one with a 6.4-inch display, most likely the Galaxy S9 Plus.
Like the S8, moving to this kind of aspect promises better handling although multimedia will be handled with difficulty with black sidebars being a problem nothing a software tweak can’t fix. The Galaxy S9 will also be an all metal glass molded device even prettier than the S8. And this pretty body will be protected by IP68 rating for that splash moments. There is also leaks that the S9 will now be ditching the age-old 3.5mm jack too. Guess it’s a good time to invest in Bluetooth headsets.
Galaxy S9 Camera, dual lens a trend now.
Although rumored, S8 didn’t come with a dual camera setup instead we got a single camera re-iterating the previous module and updating the features. This is not to say that the S8’s camera is bad or anything, it’s still an amazing camera, it should’ve been updated to perhaps something with more megapixels. 12 megapixel camera being the norm these days will change for S9 and S9 plus. The S9 is rumored to have a 13 Megapixel optically stabilized camera and the cherry on top is the rumored aperture values. It’s in the news that the S9 will go a bit further with a new sensor with a wide angle lens and f/1.4 aperture.

We will have to see in reality what this offers but on paper, this bundle offers more punch than the previous. The news goes on adding more details to the S9 plus specs too. Galaxy S9 Plus will have a dual 13 Megapixel camera module with one 28mm lens and the other 50mm lens also coming with f/1.4 aperture and OIS, there is a reason for plus in the name now.
The stills feature also includes RAW capture and pro modes for better control and videos can be shot at 4K with the inclusion of 120fps shooting as well. The front shooter on both devices will be an 8 Megapixel f/1.7 OIS camera with a wide angle lens for those perfect selfies.
Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus Hardware, a futuristic update.
Galaxy S8 came with the latest and greatest chip, the Snapdragon 835. For a consumer grade device, the jump to 10nm was also futuristic, with the silicone offering better performance and good battery life. Many manufacturers followed the trend with more budget oriented devices like the OnePlus 5 also offering the same chip with bundled 6 and 8GB RAM options. Since a Galaxy S lineup is a flagship device of the year from Samsung, this trend won’t change that much either.
The Galaxy S9 will now be fitted with a new Snapdragon chip, although rumors of Qualcomm working on new lithography, 6 or 4nm has also leaked and the S9 Plus will be soldered with the same silicone as well. The Exynos variant of these devices will also be similarly specced.
Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus will also be offered with 6GB of RAM to help in multitasking and other heavy loads. This keeps the S9 models in line with rivals and offering better overall performance than the last year’s model. A big device will also need a big battery and here is the twist, Samsung S9 will come with a 3200mAh battery and the S9 Plus will have a 3900mAh battery. The devices will also be bundled with the latest version of Android as well promising better hardware and software improvements.
Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus Release Date and Price
Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus will both be great and premium devices offering the best hardware and software features, new and improved camera and prettier body with dust and waterproofing. So where does that leave us with the release date?
The official confirmation of the release date of both these devices is yet to be announced, but leaks are pointing to the same launch date like the previous models.
In that case, we can expect a launch around April 2018 although Samsung might push the dates earlier to toughen the competition. With the launch of S9 and S9 Plus, we will have a better view of Samsung’s strategy for next and upcoming Galaxy Note 9 too. The mentioned price for the models starts at $649 for the S9 and $799 for the S9 Plus, premium tags for 2018.
